In 1830, Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume founded a watch dealership in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland. The Baume brothers' business expanded internationally, establishing branches across the British Empire by the late nineteenth century. In 1918, a partnership between William Baume and Paul Mercier led to the creation of Baume & Mercier. In the 1920s the brand was a leading producer of wristwatches. Introduced in 1973, the Riviera was among the first steel sports watches which are now so ubiquitous. The Richemont Group acquired the brand in 1988.
Product Line Overview
Baume & Mercier is a mid-range luxury brand offering a complete range of men's and women's watches in a variety of metals, case shapes, and styles. Although several watches still use movements manufactured by respectable third parties, Baume & Mercier recently developed the Baumatic movement. This impressive in-house caliber features a five day power reserve and a prestigious performance certification from the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The watchmaker has modified the caliber to manufacture in-house movements in high complications. Several of these 'manufacture' calibers feature in the Clifton Collection.
The Clifton Collection elevates the common round case style with singular movements. Time and date watches in the collection utilize the new, in-house Baumatic caliber. These Clifton Baumatic watches feature distinguished sector dial, stick indexes, and a date display. The Clifton is also available in higher complications, including day-date, moonphase, and perpetual calendar watches.
Baume & Mercier manufactures a number of dress watches, including the Classima. The Classima Collection's elegant design language includes a traditional, round case and a minimal dial with Roman numerals at twelve, nine, six, and three. With understated style, the Classima is available in a range of sizes and complications.
The Baume & Mercier Hampton Collection caters to both men and women. The collection includes the masculine Hampton Classic, the elegant Hampton Milleis, and the sportier Hampton Square. The Hampton Classic is a rectangular men's line, while the Hampton Milleis and Hampton Square Collections include designs for both sexes.
Elegant and subtle, the Baume & Mercier Diamant Collection is available in steel, 18 karat yellow gold, two-tone, with diamonds, on a strap or bracelet, and with multiple dial colors. For women desiring a feminine piece, the 30 millimeter Ilea Collection offers nine variations in several case and strap materials.
Originally introduced in 1973, the Baume & Mercier Riviera Collection offers an intriguing take on the elegant, 1970s-inspired, sports watch. The design, which predated the Patek Philippe Nautilus, retains the distinctive dodecagonal case and integrated bracelet of the original with the addition of four, visible screws on the bezel. The dial is marked by two Roman numerals at twelve and six. Several references use the in-house Baumatic movement. The Riviera is available in steel and gold, on a bracelet or strap, with diamond setting, and in various case diameters.
The exceptional William Baume Collection is composed of limited edition watches powered by complicated movements specially manufactured for Baume & Mercier. The newer Baume Collection is highly unique due to its crown position at twelve o'clock, minimalistic dials, and wire lugs.
